Frequently Asked Questions About DCT Transmission Servicing
How often should a DCT transmission be serviced?
A DCT transmission should be serviced according to your manufacturer’s schedule and how hard the car is driven, with performance and track use calling for more frequent fluid and filter changes. Because the clutches in many dual clutch gearboxes share their oil with the transmission, the fluid contaminates faster than people expect, so it often needs changing sooner than a conventional automatic. We can confirm the right service interval for your specific car if you get in contact with us.
Why does a DCT need different servicing from a normal automatic?
A DCT needs different servicing because many dual clutch gearboxes use a wet clutch design where the clutches run in the same oil as the rest of the transmission. As the clutches wear, the material they shed contaminates that shared fluid, which is why the fluid and filter need changing on a dedicated schedule. A DCT service also requires a clutch and gear calibration that a standard automatic service doesn’t involve.
What is included in a DCT transmission service at Dodson Motorsport?
A DCT service at Dodson Motorsport includes scanning the car for fault codes, draining the old fluid, removing the sump and replacing the external filter, then cleaning all components and refitting them with a new genuine pan gasket. We refill the gearbox with DMS high performance transmission fluid, carry out a clutch and gear calibration where required and finish with a quality test drive. This makes sure your transmission is running on clean fluid and shifting the way it should before the car leaves our workshop.
How much does a DCT transmission service cost in Auckland?
DCT transmission servicing at Dodson Motorsport starts from $899, with the final cost depending on your vehicle make, model and exactly what the gearbox needs. Dual clutch transmissions vary widely in design, so pricing is confirmed once we know which car you have. Fill out our contact form or call us and we’ll provide a quote.
What fluid do you use for a DCT service?
We either use OEM or equivalent, or our own in-house DMS high performance transmission fluid for dual clutch servicing, which is built to handle the demands of performance transmissions. Using the correct grade of fluid is critical in a DCT because the same oil lubricates the gears and operates the wet clutches. Running the wrong fluid is one of the most common and most damaging mistakes made when a DCT is serviced by a non specialist.
What are the signs my DCT needs servicing or repair?
Common signs a DCT needs attention include harsh or jerky gear changes, clutch judder at low speed, slipping, hesitation and warning lights or stored fault codes. A car dropping into limp mode is a strong sign the transmission needs to be scanned and serviced without delay. If you notice any of these, it’s worth booking a DCT service before a minor issue becomes a major repair.
Do I need a specialist to service my DCT, or can a general mechanic do it?
A DCT is best left to a specialist because dual clutch servicing requires the correct fluid, the right filters and proper clutch and gear calibration equipment that most general workshops don’t have. Using the wrong fluid or skipping the calibration can lead to poor shifting and even damage. At Dodson, dual clutch transmissions are a core part of what we do, so your gearbox is serviced by people who specialise in exactly this work.
