Heavier grades such as 10W-40, 15W-40 and 20W-50 sit against the older VW 501 01 standard rather than VW 502 00, which is worth knowing if you own an early watercooled Volkswagen.
The pattern worth understanding is that the numbers are not a ladder where a bigger number is always better.
VW 508 00 is a 0W-20 oil written for engines designed around very low friction, and it should not go into an older engine that was released on a thicker VW 502 00 oil.

A full ash oil leaves deposits that a particulate filter cannot burn off during a regeneration cycle, so the ash builds up, reduces the capacity of the filter and raises exhaust backpressure over time.
Oil makers build these formulations to limit the residue that reaches the filter, and Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 is one example, described as a low ash oil that protects exhaust after treatment systems and listed with both the VW 504 00 and VW 507 00 approvals.
Petrol owners are not exempt from this either.
Volkswagen Group announced that “from 2017, all Group direct injection TSI and TFSI engines will be fitted step-by-step with petrol particulate filters”, a change it said would cut fine soot particle emissions “by up to 90 per cent”, in its announcement on particulate filters for petrol engines.
Equipment varies by engine, market and year, so a late model petrol Golf, Tiguan or Polo may well have a particulate filter of its own, which makes the ash content of the oil a petrol concern rather than a diesel only one.
Will the Wrong Oil Affect Your Volkswagen Warranty?
It can, and Volkswagen states the position plainly rather than leaving it open to interpretation.
The company warns that “anyone who does not use an approved oil, risks engine damage and can affect your warranty”.
For a car still inside its factory or dealer warranty period, that makes the approval number on the bottle a warranty and financial consideration as well as a mechanical one.
Owners who service outside the dealer network should also keep proper records, because an itemised invoice is the evidence that the correct oil went in.

Could Burning Oil Cost You a Warrant of Fitness?
Yes, because visible exhaust smoke is a warrant of fitness failure in New Zealand and burning oil is one of the things that causes it.
